Chicken, Leek & Parsley Pie | The Kitchen Diaries II

Summer seems reluctant to leave this year.  The days are bathed in warm sunshine, and green leaves are still clinging onto their branches.  It’s only when dusk comes, and the crisp, cold evening air settles in, that you are reminded that autumn is indeed upon us.

This week’s Book Club recipe is perfect for these colder nights.  The third recipe I’ve tried this month from Nigel Slater’s The Kitchen Diaries II, this pie is beautiful. A filling of chicken, leeks and parsley is topped with a gorgeous, golden crust of puff pastry.  Continue reading

Blackberry Ice-Cream Cake | The Kitchen Diaries II

Verity started school last week, and I think I’m beginning to get the hang of this school run business.  Hectic mornings of last minute ironing, super-fast cereal consumption and lopsided ponytails. The mornings that I then don’t have to rush to work myself, I’ve found that I’ve been enjoying the calmer, quieter walk back home afterwards.

The bushes that line the long path that connects us to the school, are currently heavy with ripe blackberries, and I decided to take full advantage. Continue reading

September. The start of a new season, and quite possibly my favourite month.  Cooler air, foggy mornings and bushes heavy with blackberries. I love it.

I often find myself daydreaming about autumn; even on the hottest day in the middle of summer.  Nigel Slater’s The Kitchen Diaries II allows you to dip into recipes meant for cooler autumnal days or any time of year for that matter, whenever you please.  The book is a beautiful collection of recipes and tales of what he has cooked and eaten over the course of a year.
